Reaching Out Spring 2003
Strong families make strong communities
Parenting Class Provides Positive
Results
A NEW Parenting class
was taught last semester, which produced some very positive outcomes!
The course was taught by Bert Anderson and Barb Cassady using the book;
Children: The Challenge, by Rudolf Preikurs, M.D. with Vicki Soltz,
R.N.
Though the class was small,
(there were only five dedicated students) it turned out big changes!
At a recent ‘class reunion’ graduates shared some of their successes.
Two of the students tried the Family Meeting for the first time and
found them to be very useful. All of the students said they were eliminating
the "yelling" in their homes and that as a result cooperation
was increasing.
"I feel more in control
since taking the class, relates Anna . By understanding what motivates
children to behave or misbehave, I can respond appropriately. Teaching
natural consequences really helps the children understand why
a behavior is inappropriate."
Rachelle related that
her overall family environment is happy and calm now. "Everyone
feels respected and loved. We work as a team and it is so nice. I can’t
wait to see the adults that my children will become!"
Margarita was impressed
with the results she saw in her children while she was taking the course.
"The children did not want to stay in the play room provided by
Home Management and I ended up taking care of all three of them in the
classroom, says Margarita. Bert, and Barb, encouraged me to ignore their
crying and not to give into the power struggle. By the third
class they were no longer crying and in fact enjoyed their time playing
while I was able to concentrate on the material being presented."
One of the most exciting
outcomes of the Positive Parenting class is that Margarita will be starting
a weekly call-in radio program about parenting. The show will be presented
in Spanish, which Margarita says is much needed in our community. Her
husband will be helping her in this venture.
"The class has helped
me realize that there is more harmony when there is less yelling, states
Nellie. This is a wonderful class with wonderful instructors. There
has been so much that I have learned and am practicing. Thanks for all
of your support and love!"
The next Positive Parenting
class will begin Wednesday, March 12, 2003 and runs for eight weeks.
Among the topics covered are; Understanding your children - Sidestep
the Struggle for Power; Eliminate Criticism and Minimize Mistakes; Win
Cooperation; The Fallacy of Punishment and Reward; The Family Meeting
and Follow Through - Be Consistent.
